As ilhas de S. Tomé e Príncipe caracterizam-se por uma grande diversidade linguística que está directamente relacionada com dois períodos cruciais da sua história, designadamente o povoamento e o ciclo do açúcar, no século XVI, e o ciclo do café e do cacau, nos séculos XIX e XX. Propomo-nos aqui discutir as consequências destes dois períodos históricos para o actual panorama linguístico das ilhas.

The islands of S. Tomé and Príncipe are characterised by a great linguistic diversity directly related with two crucial periods of their history, namely the settlement and sugar cycle, in the 16th century, and coffee and cocoa cycle, in the 19th and 20th centuries. Here, we aim to discuss the consequences of these two historical periods for the current linguistic profile of the islands.
