António Joaquim Ribeiro - o primeiro informante de Schuchardt em Cabo Verde

Este estudo debruça-se sobre sete cartas enviadas por António Joaquim Ribeiro a Hugo Schuchardt, entre 1881 e 1883, nas quais fornece informação acerca do dialeto crioulo da Ilha de Santiago (Cabo Verde) – cartas previamente publicadas pela linguista portuguesa Nélia Alexandre e pelo autor na página web do Hugo Schuchardt Archiv de Graz, Áustria. O artigo aborda a identidade de António Joaquim Ribeiro, os tipos de materiais que enviou a Schuchardt, a razão pela qual a correspondência entre Schuchardt e Ribeiro parou abruptamente em Janeiro de 1883, e ainda que informação valiosa sobre o estado da variedade de Santiago do crioulo caboverdiano é possível extrair das cartas e materiais de Ribeiro. Com respeito à última questão, defende-se que, por qualquer métrica disponível para o autor, Ribeiro parece ter tido um excelente domínio do crioulo de Santiago e que, por isso, devemos interpretar eventuais discrepâncias entre o que escreveu e o que agora sabemos sobre a variedade de Santiago como indicações de mudança linguística e não como erros, avançando exemplos ilustrativos que sustentam esta linha de argumentação.

Abstract
This study focuses on seven letters sent by António Joaquim Ribeiro to Hugo
Schuchardt, between 1881 and 1883, in which he provides information about the Creole dialect of the island of Santiago (Cape Verde) – letters previously published by the Portuguese linguist Nélia Alexandre and the author on the webpage of the Hugo
Schuchardt Archiv in Graz, Austria. The article addresses the identity of António
Joaquim Ribeiro, the types of materials he sent Schuchardt, the reason why the correspondence between Schuchardt and Ribeiro stopped abruptly in January 1883, and also what valuable information about the state of the Santiago variety of Capeverdean Creole can be extracted from Ribeiro's letters and materials. With respect to the last question, it is argued that, by any metric available to the author, Ribeiro appears to have had an excellent command of Santiago Creole and that, therefore, we should interpret potential discrepancies between what he wrote and what we now know of the Santiago variety as indications of language change and not as mistakes, putting forward illustrative examples in support of this argument.
