Este artigo enfoca a migração caboverdiana para São Tomé e Príncipe (STP) no século XX e seu efeito linguístico no kabuverdianu falado nesta região. Alguns estudiosos, como Nascimento (2001, 2004) e Sousa (2014-2015), apontam que, em 1902, começa a afluir um grande número de trabalhadores caboverdianos contratados para trabalhar nas roças de STP. Contudo, a realidade dessa migração ainda não tem sido tema de muitos estudos, sobretudo no tocante às questões linguísticas, não havendo discussões voltadas à variedade de kabuverdianu falada na Ilha do Príncipe, lacunas que justificam a realização desta pesquisa. Este estudo possui os seguintes objetivos: (i) delinear a história da migração caboverdiana para STP; e (ii) apresentar uma análise preliminar de aspectos fonético-fonológicos e lexicais do kabuverdianu do Príncipe. Para atingir os objetivos, foram realizadas pesquisa bibliográfica e análise de dados coletados em trabalho de campo na Ilha do Príncipe em 2018. Após as análises, percebe-se que, a partir dos antigos contratados caboverdianos, o kabuverdianu chegou às ilhas STP e passou a fazer parte da paisagem linguística, se mantendo com os descendentes. Quanto aos aspectos linguísticos, a comparação entre as variedades principense e santiaguense de kabuverdianu apontou diversas similaridades fonéticas e lexicais (com relação, por exemplo, ao inventário fonético vocálico e consonantal e no tratamento de segmentos oriundos do português, como [b] e [ʎ]), como já defendido por Semedo (2016), e demonstrou a necessidade de mais estudos voltados ao kabuverdianu falado nas ilhas de STP.

This article focuses on Cape Verdean migration to São Tomé and Príncipe (STP) in the 20th century and its linguistic effect on the Kabuverdianu spoken in this region. Some scholars, such as Nascimento (2001, 2004) and Sousa (2014-2015), point out that in 1902 a large number of Cape Verdean contract labourers started to work in the STP plantations. However, the reality of this migration has not yet been the subject of many studies, especially concerning linguistic issues. There are no discussions focusing on the variety of Kabuverdianu spoken on Principe island, which justifies this research. This study has the following objectives: (i) to outline the history of Cape Verdean migration to STP; (ii) present a preliminary analysis of phonetic-phonological and lexical aspects of the Kabuverdianu from Príncipe. To achieve the objectives, we carried out bibliographic research and analysis of data collected in fieldwork on the island of Príncipe in 2018. After analyzing the data, it is clear that the Kabuverdianu language arrived in STP through the former Cape Verdean contract labourers and started to be part of the linguistic landscape, being spoken by their descendants. As for linguistic aspects, the comparison between the varieties of Kabuverdianu from Príncipe and Santiago pointed out several phonetic and lexical similarities (regarding, for example, to the vocalic and consonantal phonetic inventory and to the treatment of segments from Portuguese, like [b] and [ʎ]), as already defended by Semedo (2016), and demonstrated the need for further studies focused on the Kabuverdianu spoken in the STP islands.
